Your GFCI won’t reset? Here’s what to do

- 9:30 am - March 13th, 2024

A GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) is a safety feature in your home’s electrical system. These outlets are commonly found in your kitchens and bathrooms, and it can be frustrating and concerning when they don’t work. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can take:

  • Check for moisture damage: GFCI outlets are sensitive to moisture and won’t reset if they’re wet. Check for any signs of water and dry the area thoroughly before you try and reset.
  • Press the reset button: These outlets are equipped with a “reset” button – press down firmly and hold for a few seconds. If that doesn’t work, press the “test” button first, and try the “reset” button again.
  • Test other outlets: If other outlets in the same room or circuit aren’t working, check for tripped breakers. Resetting tripped breakers might not work, and that could indicate a more complex wiring issue.
  • Check for tripped breakers: Tripped breakers in your main electrical panel could be the reason your GFCI outlet isn’t working. If you find one, reset it, and try resetting your GFCI again.
  • Check for loose parts: Connections and screws can become loose over time, which could be the culprit of a faulty GFCI. Tighten the terminal screw and loose wires and try resetting the GFCI again. If wires are loose beyond repair, contact us!
