Why It’s Important to Properly Size Your Heating System

- 12:41 pm - November 18th, 2019

There are a few schools of thought on sizing home heating equipment. Some homeowners might think that bigger is better, while others might believe that smaller equipment is saving them money by using less power. There’s only one right answer, however – the right size for your home!

Homeowners throughout Virginia should be enjoying ample heating comfort with a heating system that’s the right fit for their home. Here’s why it’s important not to go too big or too small with your heating system:

  • Manage Energy Costs: A heating system that’s too large will cycle on and off constantly as it attempts to maintain even temperatures in the home. Meanwhile, a system that’s too small will run continuously as it tries to keep your home comfortable. In both situations, energy costs will be higher than if the system was the appropriate size for the space.

  • Extend Lifespan: Because oversized heating systems constantly cycle on and off, and undersized systems are always running, the wear and tear takes a greater toll on the systems’ health and efficiency. Properly sized equipment will experience wear and tear at a normalized rate – so repairs and service calls are less frequent, and the equipment lasts longer.

  • Even Heat: Large heating equipment releases warm air in bursts – often leaving certain rooms feeling hotter than others. Undersized equipment, on the other hand, will struggle to keep temperatures even throughout the space. Right-sized equipment provides even warmth from room to room!

If you notice cold spots in your home, if your equipment needs frequent service and maintenance, or if your energy costs have been higher than usual, you could have a heating system that’s too big or too small for your home! If you think your equipment is the wrong size, contact us today to find the right-sized heating system for you!
