Safety Tips for Your Standby Generator

You’ve made the smart decision to protect your home and your home comfort with a professionally installed emergency backup generator from E.T. Lawson. To prolong the safe use of your generator, it’s important to stay knowledgeable!

That said, here are some tips to make sure your generator is ready when crisis calls:

  • Schedule Annual Inspections – Have a qualified E.T. Lawson service technician check your generator and venting systems annually.

  • Know Your Generator – Be sure to read your user manual and follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions exactly.

  • Know Your Home – Know the location of your electrical panel or fuse box. Also, be aware of the layout of your gas lines, especially if you are doing any type of landscaping or renovations.

  • Protect Your Appliances – Certain voltage-sensitive electronic devices (televisions and computers, for example) should not be powered by an emergency generator unless protected with a UL-listed surge protector.

  • Be Wary of Propane or Gas Leaks – Both propane and natural gas have distinct smells to make leak detection easy. Make sure your family is aware of and can recognize the smell. If you smell a leak, leave the house and contact your local fire department immediately.

  • Consider a CO Detector – Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and toxic gas byproduct of burning fuel. We recommend installing CO detectors on each level of your home.

They say that knowledge is power, and in this case knowledge is the power to protect your comfort and your family! Get to know your generator, and all of your other home comfort systems, with E.T. Lawson! Contact us online to learn more, or give us a call if you have any questions or concerns.
