Holiday Electrical Safety Tips from E.T. Lawson

- 3:09 pm - December 11th, 2019

As Hampton Roads’ full-service comfort provider, we handle many of our customers’ electrical needs – and that means we’ve seen it all when it comes to accidents involving residential electrical systems, especially around the holiday season!

In order to help our customers prevent any accidents, we’ve put together a list of Holiday Electrical Safety Tips.

  • Inspect electrical decorations for damage before use. Cracked or damaged sockets, loose or bare wires, and loose connections may cause serious shock or start a fire

  • Do not overload electrical outlets. Overloaded electrical outlets are a common cause of holiday fire. If you have a lot of lights to plug in, consider adding more receptacles inside your home!
  • Never connect more than three strings of incandescent lights. More than three strands can potentially blow out a fuse or cause a fire.

  • Use battery-operated candles. Another common cause of holiday fires is a burning candle left unattended.

  • Keep combustibles at least three feet from heat sources. This is especially important around the mantle of a fireplace – so check those stockings!

  • Protect cords from damage. Avoid letting furniture pinch cords, and don’t thread them through small spaces such as doors and windows. Damaged cords can lead to fires or electrical shock.

Your safety is our priority! If you have any concerns about the condition of the electrical or heating systems in your home, don’t hesitate to call us. Contact us online to learn more about our residential electrical services. We hope you have a safe and wonderful holiday season!
