Company History


E.T. Lawson's long history began in 1919 when we opened for business in our present location. At that time our customers were the fishing fleets of Hampton Roads. We sold them marine goods, groceries, and as the fleets converted from sail to motor power - petroleum products.

Approximately ten years later, I.E. Lawson made the first heating oil delivery on the Peninsula to the Hampton Country Club - in a pickup with two 55-gallon drums. Three days later they called again, and the rest is history. In 2004, we added electrical and plumbing departments. Today, we are the largest home Bioheat Heating Oil company in Hampton Roads, serving over 8,000 customers from Virginia Beach to Williamsburg. We also service and install all kinds of heating equipment, including gas and electric.

Industry Leadership

NORA logo E.T. Lawson employees have not only achieved Silver and Gold Certification through the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) Education Center; we have also made tremendous strides toward advancing the goals of NORA and raising the bar for the entire Oilheat industry. In fact, E.T. Lawson President Donald B. Allen, Jr. was instrumental in helping reinstitute NORA's Silver Certification Program at the national level in the early 1990s. As a main component of NORA's professional education and training focus, the Silver Certification Program certifies those Oilheat technicians who have:
  1. A minimum of 3 years' work experience verified on company letterhead and signed by company owner or manager.
  2. A minimum of 100 hours of Oilheat education training.
  3. Earned 78% or higher on the Silver Certification Examination.

Not all Bioheat and service companies are the same. You know that. And you know that, as the consumer, you are the final judge. You need to ask these questions about any oil supplier and service provider you are considering doing business with:

Important FAQsQ: Do they have liability insurance to protect you and your family?

A: E.T. Lawson has $7,000,000 of liability insurance in place. The performance of all of our service representatives is insured.

Q: Are all delivery meters inspected, calibrated and sealed by the State Department of Weights and Measures?

A: E.T. Lawson's meters are inspected and sealed annually. In addition, we install breaklock interfaces with the meters as additional insurance for your protection.

Q: Will they still be around when you need them?

A: E.T. Lawson has been providing customer service since 1919. During that time we have weathered depressions, wars, embargoes, allocations and the coldest winters. We stand on our record of service and our commitment to our customers.

Service Technician

Service Department


E.T. Lawson maintains a comprehensive service department that is able to handle all of your heating, cooling and water heating needs, whether you heat by oil, gas or electricity. Our entire service department has or is receiving the rigorous training necessary to obtain certification from the National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA). All of our technicians have also completed and passed the Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Program developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Furthermore...
  1. WE GUARANTEE TO BE FAIR
    You should not be penalized for emergencies. For that reason we do not charge extra for overtime work.

  2. WE GUARANTEE TO FIX IT RIGHT
    All service work is guaranteed for one full year - parts and labor.

  3. WE GUARANTEE TO BE THERE
    We maintain an around-the-clock capability to meet your heating and cooling needs. A night supervisor and two or more technicians are on call year-round to meet your emergency needs.
